Roe V Wade – How I see it

I wanted to talk about Roe V Wade. Since it is in the top of mind now.

First, and full disclosure, this is truly disturbing. I am pro-choice, and the government taking this away is not pro-life, it is pro-control. Not only are they removing this safety net, they are providing nothing in return other than scolding. This has never personally affected me(that I am aware of), but you never know.

I am not writing this to change anyones mind. If anything, I hope it causes you to think. These are things that I HOPE I am wrong about, but I have a feeling I am not. These are more observations than me trying to make a political statement, and I think we live in a society that politics are more of a badge of honor to defend rather than listening to someone else’s views.

The Great Hypocrisy

Article from Politico: https://www.politico.com/news/2022/05/02/supreme-court-abortion-draft-opinion-00029473

“The Constitution does not prohibit the citizens of each State from regulating or prohibiting abortion,” the draft concludes. “Roe and Casey arrogated that authority. We now overrule those decisions and return that authority to the people and their elected representatives.” — Political article above

The argument is that the Constitution should specifically call it out, and this is something that was written centuries ago. In turn, is leading some to speculate that it will eventually be used against same sex marriages.

The thing is, none of this is ever about pro-life. It really isn’t. Anyone who says otherwise is making it about them personally and ignoring the bigger picture. This is pro-control. This is pro-”You are not grateful, so we are going to take away your toys.” .

If you look at the arguments, and look at the people making it everywhere, these are the SAME people that support the January 6th attack in some way. So that when it comes to a woman’s body, we should follow the constitution. When it comes to our election process when it doesn’t go their way and goes AGAINST the Constitution, and serving as a public official, it is standing up for what you believe in? Keep in mind, the Supreme Court makeup is the way it is because of the SAME group of people. Different rules depending if they like the person or not. This is not democracy, this is dictatorship.

The downward spiral

I’m a historian, and I studied the fall of Rome. Here’s what life is like in a dying empire. The coronavirus is a rapidly developing news story, so some of the content in this article might be out of date. Check…www.motherjones.com

I would argue that someone who is pro-life and/or pro-constitution would have the same emotions and opinions on how disturbing January 6th was for America is the extreme minority. Agreeing with something, and putting your head in the hole for another, is how this nation of punishment is growing.

Just this weekend, I had a political discussion with my father. He is definitely conservative, and I am definitely liberal. It was a civil discussion. We still talked about other things afterwards. We still get along. The one thing I noticed is that how much angrier he got. The more I tried to point out the hypocrisy, the more he deflected. Every time I tried to use his words against, he immediately went how lower income are lazy in some way. Every time. I ended the conversation telling him “Basically, your political views are the beatings will continue until the morale improves.”

I think this is where we are at in society now. People are so scared about what they can lose, so angry at everyone else, that the conservatives(i.e. Republicans) in power are more concerned with the instilling order than they are with helping. Their order that is.

This will eventually lead to civil unrest. When punishing the lower income, punishing women, punishing anyone who is having less and less to lose, nothing good will ever come from this. The anger will grow, the people will grow. Regardless of what you believe in, if you don’t give people a reason to follow laws, they. will not follow the laws. At the end of the day, laws are there help keep you safe. If they stop doing that to a person, what do you think will happen? Now imagine an entire class of people…

Corporations Vs Government

Abortion challenges Corporate America’s political activismThe Supreme Court’s forthcoming abortion ruling will put Corporate America in a vise, squeezed between employees…www.axios.com

This is another disturbing trend, Corporations are starting to take the role of the government. That punishment nature I talked about towards people? Happening to corporations as well, Florida’s response to Disney is helping pave the way.

Corporations have started to come together in response to politics. Defending our voting rights is a good example. While this is good for now, there is some disturbing long term implications.

Our government punishing people without giving the resources they need to live. Corporations standing up for our rights and provide the help we need. Who is good and bad is getting more and more blurred. An example is Amazon. On the one hand, they will pay for travel for its employees to get abortion care(from the article above). On the other hand, they are against unions.

With companies becoming bolder in their stance as time goes on, and governments retaliating, the working class of all kinds are going to feel the squeeze. Which city you live in, which state you live in, the company you work for…that in a nutshell will dictate the kind of life and resources you have access to. That to me, is a scary thought. And that to me seems like the end of the American Dream.

How do I feel about all this?

I am sad for people. I know I have it good, and I don’t take it for granted at all. There are people out there struggling. In life, mentally, financially, and these are the people asking for help. Asking to be treated equally. All the while, being more and more punished. Not just by laws, but by the system of capitalism. I am seeing that no one can get the help they need UNTIL they have a well paying job and are very productive in it.

I am not angry about this, but I am very sad and disappointed. Don’t take this as I don’t care. I know people may equate anger as how much you care. It is actually further from the truth. I just wish I knew how to help in ways that I am good at.

The more and more as things like this continue to happen in our society. The repercussions that occur. The long term mistrust of others and the control that is being instilled. And I keep asking myself: How can someone be a Republican and a good person? How can you say you are helping, but all the while talk about how people need to be punished by the government? How can you expect someone to change when they have no resources to help them change? I know anyone can point out specific examples, but these are questions I am asking and never see from Republicans anywhere.

The undoing of Roe V Wade to me is basically one more example of how far angry people will go to remove rights from someone they disagree with in America. It is funny in a terribly sad way how “human decency” and “politics” are becoming one and the same.
